I really want to become a nurse to care for other people. Before I came to Covenant House I didn’t have time to pursue any schooling because I was a teenage mother raising two daughters. Now that I’m at Covenant House though, I have time to do that. My daughters are staying with their grandmothers while I’m here working for a better future for all of us. Now I’ve got my Clinical Nurse Specialist certification, and I’m taking classes to prepare for the GRE. Soon I want to enroll at Madonna University’s College of Nursing and Health to become a Registered Nurse.

Instability has always been a part of Nikia’s life; she grew up in Michigan’s Foster Care system. By the time she was 18, she had moved through 11 homes. When she aged out of the system, she moved in with her grandmother, but, as Nikia put it, their personalities “clashed,” so she didn’t feel it was the ideal situation. She moved out on her own and at 19 had her first daughter. Raising her daughter “was kinda hard,” and only got harder when her relationship with her daughter’s father became abusive. She was able to stay in a domestic violence shelter for a while.
