I couldn't be any happier right now! Thanks to Covenant House, I have my very own apartment. Even though my life was very difficult in the past, I know that everything is going to work out. I've never really had my own place so this really means alot to me. I want to personally thank Ms. Blanca and Southwest Solutions for finding a place for me to move. I know this is only the beginning of good things to come!

Last week was such a great week for me. I got my GED! I plan on going to college in the fall to further my education. Even though I work at Happy's Pizza now, I plan on going much further in the future. My life right now is really great. Covenant House has really helped me. I want to thank them and my GED teachers for all of their love and support. This is the happiest I've been in a long time!

Instability has always been a part of Nikia’s life; she grew up in Michigan’s Foster Care system having moved through 11 homes by the time she turned 18. When she aged out of the system, she moved in with her grandmother, but, as Nikia put it, their personalities “clashed,” so she didn’t feel it was the ideal situation. She moved out on her own and at 19 had her first daughter. Raising her daughter “was hard,” and only got harder when her relationship with her daughter’s father became abusive.

Covenant House residents work not only to improve their own lives but also the lives of others. Saturday July 24th, fourteen residents and two staff spent the day building a playground on an abandoned lot right down the street from Covenant House. They collaborated with the Starlight Community Baptist Church and the Playground Project to transform an empty lot behind the church into a playground for children in need. The Knight Foundation and Kaboom playgrounds sponsored the project.

Covenant House is a place where broken dreams meet bright possibilities. There has been such a diverse group of individuals to walk the halls at CHM, inspiring and mentoring the youth here. CHM has been blessed to have remarkable people such as Juilliard students, Broadway stars, a Superbowl Champion and many more. With as many gifted people that visit CHM, the true heroes are those that work day in and day out to see that the youth here are taken care of. The people that know the youth on a first name basis and treat them like family.

Many of the residents at Covenant House usually aren’t able to experience life outside the city of Detroit. Worries about safety and shelter in their lives have often come before thoughts of entertainment or fun. So when the Covenant House residents have an opportunity to go on a field trip they absolutely love it.

Blanca Suárez, instructor of Spanish 101: Language and Cultural Studies in Spanish, taught the kids of Covenant House Michigan about cultural awareness. This class helped to close the gaps that occur by learning fundamentals of a different language, cultural activities and cuisine. Every day for six weeks, the youth of CHM will attend this class and will learn something new each week.
