Apartment Living
Many of our youth have never lived independently and have no concept of paying bills and rent on a regular basis, budgeting money wisely and maintaining an apartment. Although our residential programs help to prepare youth for independent living, the cost of living is hard to maintain on minimum wage salaries. Many of our youth do not qualify for low income and/or permanent housing because many permanent housing programs that have been established for the homeless are for those who are “chronically homeless”.
CHM has developed a program to manage permanent housing opportunities for our youth through apartment living. Youth are provided with services to assist in their move from Covenant House Michigan into their apartment. CHM’s after care services help them settle in their new home and assist them in maintaining an appropriate living environment. These services continue for a maximum of six months.
