Thurman
Thurman came to CHM homeless after being put out of his apartment. He just couldn’t afford the bills any longer. In the 12th grade, Thurman wanted to move out and get his own apartment. Against the advice of his Mom, he made the leap.
Thurman continued to attend school, but soon the cost of his apartment became a problem and he needed to work more hours. He dropped out just months before getting his diploma. For two years, Thurman continued working until he was laid off. He was forced to leave his apartment and move in with friends. He surfed from one friend’s house to another until he ended up at his uncle’s house.
Thurman knew he was getting nowhere fast. He heard about CHM and came to our Crisis Center. He worked to finish his GED so that he could get a better paying job. On August 22, 2004, Thurman graduated with CHM’s GED class. He was hired at Meridian Automotive as a Cell Associate, reinforcing car bumpers. He saved enough money to move into a town house in Romulus that fits in his budget.
“CHM taught me the importance of saving and that life isn’t one big party,” said Thurman. “You need to be responsible.” He plans to purchase a car and start computer programming and networking classes at Wayne County Community College in the fall.
“I’m thankful to CHM because there came a point in my life that I was knocked down and CHM was here to help me get back on my feet,” said Thurman.
