Murline

(Written by Melissa Golpe) Mimi took me into the three story Victorian style home that she slept in. I nervously followed her inside the gutted house, and up the creaking staircase. I was worried we’d fall through the floor, or run into a crack addict...who knows what secrets this big house could be holding. And that was in the middle of the day. I can’t imagine how terrified I would be to sleep in this house alone at night.

Lying on the floor in the midst of garbage and strewn blankets was the board game, Life. The irony of that struck me - this was Mimi’s life. This is life for thousands of youth who end up homeless because no one really cares.

If you met Mimi you’d probably be a bit scared. She can be angry and loud at times. She’s a fighter and won’t back down. But I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to get to know this beautiful and intelligent young lady who is hiding behind the pain of having to survive the streets.

Mimi grew up feeling alone and unwanted. Her mother would tell her she wished she never conceived her. She joined a gang in high school and ran away from home on several occasions. “Nobody else loved me or cared for me, at least they wanted me around,” said Mimi.
Please help us make sure that people like Mimi have a sanctuary to escape. We thank God for your help and support of Covenant House Michigan. You are giving these kids hope for a new life.
