Michael
Michael is a 21-year old male living in our Crisis Center. He was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After several hospital visits, heavy sedation with antipsychotic drugs, and life with an abusive family who could not deal with his mental illness, Michael eventually found his way to CHM.
With the help of staff who monitor his illness and a Southwest Solutions’ program called the Fisher House, which teaches him how to cope with his illness and stay focused, Michael is on his way to independence.
“CHM gives you a chance at life!” exclaimed Michael. “There are positive role models here who won’t give up on me. I am learning to be stronger and have confidence.”
You might remember Michael from previous CHM literature. He has been a resident and part of the Covenant House family for a couple of years. Michael had a lot of struggles and hardships growing up. He was abused by his family and spent most of his childhood running the streets and hanging out with people who took advantage of him.
Just before Christmas, he stopped by our administrative offices to bid farewell before moving to his apartment in Southwest Detroit. Now part of the Path Program at Southwest Solutions, Michael will receive supportive services to make sure he continues to manage his mental health. Although he plans to visit CHM regularly, Michael had some lasting words for a couple CHM staff: “Ms. Johnson and Ms. Norma, you raised a soldier!”
There are many success stories like Michael’s at CHM, but we need your continued love and support to find and help the thousands of kids still at-risk in our community.
Donate now to help Michael and other kids in our Crisis Center.
