Melissa
Melissa grew up on the southwest side of Detroit. She had what seemed to be an average childhood: a stable home with loving parents, food on the table and a roof over her head.
While she was attending Western High School she met a boy who seemed really nice. However, it wasn’t long until he became very jealous, questioning her every move and every person she associated with. His jealously turned into physical abuse and Melissa only saw glimpses of the boy she first met.
She felt trapped and afraid. The only way she knew to escape the abuse was to drop out of high school and leave her home. The school nurse had told her about Covenant House and the programs we offer. Melissa quickly made her way to our doors where she was safe.
Melissa was strong enough to get out of an abusive situation. Many girls deal with abuse for several years before they are able to break free, some die trying to leave.
Over half of the youth who come to CHM have been sexually and/or physically abused and neglected by people who are supposed to care for them. They feel afraid, helpless, guilty, angry, frustrated, isolated and confused.
The effects of exposure to abuse will vary depending on the age of the child or teen, the length, frequency and severity of the abuse. Kids who were abused have poor academic performance, low self-esteem, poor social skills, drug and alcohol use/abuse, suicidal behavior, criminal activity, early and risky sexual activity, or pregnancy
The good news is that children and teens are resilient; they are strong and able to heal if they are listened to, nurtured and allowed to feel safe.
At CHM, we offer unconditional love, a support system and the resources needed to counteract the effects of abuse. Please pray for our kids as they continue to heal, and pray for our staff and volunteers so they are able to continue to mentor and love.
