Kevin

Kevin, a resident in CHM’s ROP program recently became a Junior Outreach Staff Member where he helps young people who, like him, need a stable place to call home. Kevin takes calls from people who are in crisis and are looking for help. He helps the team pass out information to young people on the streets and he even gives advice to those who choose to come back to Covenant House. “This job has really taught me to be considerate of what other people go through.”

Having been homeless as a young child, Kevin learned how to survive the streets of St. Croix, Virgin Islands. “We used to stay in the slums and get food from extended family or soup kitchens until we were taken away from our dad.” Kevin spent years moving in and out of different foster homes. He then moved to Detroit to reunite with his mom, but she quickly lost custody, which threw Kevin back into the foster care system. After yet another failed attempt to reconcile with his mom, Kevin found himself on the streets again. “I stayed in a park for awhile, but I could never really fall asleep because it just kept raining.” Kevin searched for shelter and found an abandoned house. When asked if he was scared about sleeping there he said, “No, you have to go into survival mode.”

Kevin is a survivor. With the help of Covenant House, he is getting his life together and graduating with his GED this coming spring.

Thank you for providing a place for Kevin to live, grow and help others find refuge.
