Edward

On July 10, 2005 Edward accomplished one of his many goals, he received his GED. When he came to CHM, Ms. Owens, GED Instructor, talked to him about working towards taking the exam. Edward was doubtful that he would be ready so soon. However, with a little encouragement, he set his mind to achieving this goal. Not only did he obtain his GED, he had the third highest score in his class. This was a proud moment for Edward considering a few short months ago he was homeless. Born and raised in Massachusetts, 22-year old Edward moved to Michigan in 2000. He continued going to school, but dropped out due to family responsibilities. Eventually, he moved into his own apartment. He was later laid off from work and could not keep up with his bills. He moved in with friends for a short time and ended up on the street. One day while walking to the Salvation Army, he passed by CHM. The Salvation Army explained CHM’s programs and let him use their phone. He moved into the Crisis Center right away. Within 2 1/2 weeks, Edward found a job at Au Bon Pain in Campus Martius Park as a dishwasher, and has since been promoted to prep cook. He then moved into the Rights of Passage Transitional Living Program. When he wasn’t working, he prepared for the GED test. Today, he stands tall. He has enrolled at Wayne County Community College and plans to get a Bachelor of Social Science Degree and Minor in Business Management. He also plans on getting an apartment in two months so he can have a home for him and his son. “You gotta have plans,” said Edward smiling. Edward has set goals for himself and he is accomplishing them one by one. It is people like Edward who confirm the importance of CHM’s services. Congratulations Edward! You’ve made us proud.
