Danielle

“I am an entrepreneur,” says 20 year-old Danielle who recently applied for a patent of a home security device. Danielle has been at Covenant House for the past nine months where she has completed her GED and is pursuing a business management degree at Baker Community College. She plans to move into her own apartment later this Spring. Danielle is set to embark on a prosperous road.

Although Danielle is determined to be successful she’s had to overcome a number of obstacles. When Danielle was young she was taken away from her mother who is neglectful and struggles with a gambling addiction. Her older sister and grandmother agreed to take care of her so she wouldn’t have to go into the foster care system. In 12th grade Danielle moved back in with her mom and things began to go downhill. Danielle became very depressed because she couldn’t deal with her mom’s addiction. “I was sad because I wanted my mom to be involved in my senior year, but she was too busy with her boyfriend and gambling.” Danielle dropped out of school and moved out. She struggled with depression, but kept pushing forward. She rented a place and braided hair to make ends meet until one day the place she was renting foreclosed. She was left with nowhere to go. Danielle came to Covenant House and found the support system she needed to get back on track. “The staff have really helped me. Ms. Campbell is my Mother figure, Ms. Taylor is my spiritual mother, Mr. Simpson teaches me life skills and Mr. Johnson encourages me to let go of my anger for my mom so I can open myself up to new things,” says Danielle.

Thank you for providing a safe haven for Danielle. She has so much to give and now she has a place where she is loved and appreciated.
