Our History

1969

Covenant House was established in 1969 with a single small shelter on Manhattan’s lower east side.

It was founded in recognition that homeless young people have special needs that cannot be met by organizations serving homeless adults.

In the mid-1990s, a thorough needs assessment established the fact that Michigan’s homeless young people are in considerable danger.

At that time, homeless youth had few options other than adult shelters.

Other agencies had provided some programming and shelter beds for homeless young people, especially pregnant girls.

However, they were unable to do more than scratch the surface of the problem.

In 1997, Covenant House Michigan (CHM) opened its East Side Community Service Center. Almost immediately, CHM became known and accepted among Detroit’s troubled young people as a place where they will be treated with respect and unconditional love.

Shortly thereafter, CHM opened its Southwest Community Service Center and a Job Development Center within the City of Detroit.

In 1999, the Archdiocese of Detroit offered a 5.3 acre site, a former senior citizens’ residence in Detroit. CHM transformed the property into a campus that houses two residential programs, a dining and recreation center and administrative offices.

Today, Covenant House Michigan continues to meet the needs of young adults, providing them refuge and an opportunity for a better life. The agency has serviced over 20,000 youth to date.

CHM has been in the midst of a nearly $5 million Capital Campaign to renovate buildings on the main campus. A new 45-bed Crisis Center (shelter) has been built, the 30-bed Rights of Passage transitional living facility has been renovated and the Commons Building, which houses the Dining Hall, Kitchen, Fitness Center and Learning Center has been completed.
