Sandy Vazquez began supporting Covenant House in the 1970s, long before there was a Michigan campus. She was moved by our mission and felt called to make a difference in so many young lives. “The reason I chose Covenant House,” Vazquez said, “is because I think intervening in the lives of young adults while they still have a chance to turn things around is an incredible opportunity.”

It wasn’t long after CHM opened its doors that we were blessed to have Sandy on our campus. Her contributions range from calling people on the phone to tell them about CHM, to tutoring kids in the GED program once a week, to maintaining the flower beds on campus. She recently mentioned that she has some weed and feed stocked for the summer months that she will bring to CHM.

When asked how volunteering her has impacted her life, Sandy wrote:
Volunteering at CHM for the last several years has enriched my life in many ways. Having been a literacy tutor for several years, I thought that being a GED tutor would be a good start. Imagine my surprise when it became quite apparent that math is usually the greatest area of need. My mind has had to resurrect concepts that were hidden for over thirty years.

Contacts with the young adults at CHM have deepened my appreciation for the beautiful diversity of humanity. Each is a unique individual who has experienced challenges in life but can still express hope for a better future. They have humbled me into acknowledging the blessings I often take for granted.

Finally, I have had the pleasure of spreading the word about the accomplishments of CHM to anyone who will listen. I wear my CHM t-shirts proudly in the hope of having opportunities to explain that here, in this time, there are miracles happening and people doing God’s work in the world.
