About Amyre Makupson:
Amyre Makupson, always considered one of television’s most respected and active anchors, served as Public Affairs Manager for UPN-50 and CBS-62, as well as news anchor for the UPN-50 ten o’clock nightly news and CBS-62 eyewitness news. She was executive producer and host of Straight Talk, a weekly issue-oriented talk show, and Straight Talk for Kids, a quarterly talk show. She hosted the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Telethon, March of Dimes Telethon, and the Michigan Humane Society Telethon. As Public Affairs Manager for both stations, she was responsible for local public service programming and license renewal procedures. Although her 27-year broadcasting career ended after Viacom ceased newscasts in December 2002, she continues to remain involved in special station projects.
During her television broadcasting career she earned numerous awards including Emmy Awards for Best News Anchor, Best Interview/Discussion Program and four times for Best Commentary; a total of twenty-four nominations.
She has won awards from the Detroit Press Club, Michigan Association of Broadcasters, Oakland County Bar Association, Associated Press, American Women in Radio and Television, Women’s Advertising Club of Detroit, and Women in Communication.
Some of her other awards and citations include being named Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News, 2002 Distinguished Woman of the Year by the General Motors Women’s Club, Humanitarian of the Year by the March of Dimes, the Bishop Harrington Award from the Mental Illness Research Association, the Order of Charity Award by Providence Hospital, Business Woman of the Year by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women, Inc., and Media Person of the Year by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She is also listed in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who Among African Americans.
Ms. Makupson devotes several hours each week to various civic and charitable events. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association, the Sickle Cell Association, March of Dimes, The Skillman Foundation and Providence Hospital Foundation. She hosted two television talk shows featuring Covenant House Michigan in 2002 and has spoken at CHM events.
A native of Detroit, Ms. Makupson holds a Master of Arts degree in Speech Arts/Communication Theory from the American University in Washington, DC, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dramatics and Speech from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Amyre and her husband, Walter, live in Southfield, Michigan. They have two children.
Amyre has been a member of the Covenant House Michigan Board of Directors since 2003.
