You are a Mother to me
A Mother is someone who is always there. Through the good times and bad, through tears and laughter, she gives her life for her children. She prepares them with all they need so when it comes time to leave, they can make the journey.
Blanca Suarez has been a part of the Covenant House family since 1997. She began as a caseworker at the Southwest Community Service Center where she worked with kids in the community who were at-risk of becoming homeless. Today she is a Residential advisor in our Crisis Center and the kids absolutely adore her. When asked her reason for serving at Covenant House, she states:
I like to listen and engage in conversation with the kids. I like to find out about their family history, needs and wants so I can see how I can be part of the reconstruction of their life.
Covenant House Michigan thanks all the wonderful women who serve as Mothers to our young people everyday.
Here's what our kids had to say about their mother figures:
- Ms. Taylor is great. She is really happy and gives spiritual guidance.
-Martin, age 20 - Ms. Campbell is a mother figure. She is really caring and helpful.
-Danielle, age 20 - Ms. Stephanie is like a mother. She takes care of me and helps me learn.
-Delano, age 18 - I love Ms. V. She is funny, fun, crazy and you can really talk to her about anything.
-Jessmyn, age 16 - Mrs. Rodriguez is like a mother to me because when I have problems I talk to her and she can help me understand what I am going through.
-Ashley, age 17 - Ms. Peeples gives me helpful tips about parenting. She helped me get information that my parents would not help me find.
-Erica, age 17 - Ms. Owens is like a Grandma figure. She is really sweet. She fusses at us, but she wants us to be the very best.
-Brittany, age 17 - Ms. Parson is silly, she is a great teacher. She will uplift you and makes me smile even when I am having a bad day.
-Nikia, age 22
