A Wonderland of Hope

May 6, 2009 - 2:59pm

Covenant House Michigan’s A Wonderland of Hope, was a night of good food, laughter, fun, and memorable moments. With an Alice and Wonderland theme designed by our very own Volunteer Coordinator’s Mom, every detail was carried out from the hand crafted characters to the card shaped chocolates.

Old games were played with new twists. The Queen replaced Simon in “The Queen Says” and “Pass the Teapot” took the place of the old favorite “Hot Potato.” Delicious foods and treats were abundant and enjoyed, in particular the Very Merry Unbirthday Cake. And although the night was filled with fun, we were all gathered for a very specific reason; volunteer appreciation.

Without our volunteers, it is hard to say that CHM would even be a possibility. From all walks of life, our volunteers include students, teachers, doctors, parents, lawyers, athletes, and former residents. They take the time out of their busy schedules to spread the word about CHM, and donate clothes, money and time with the residents on such a consistent basis, never expecting anything back. They believe in CHM and they show it!

It would not be a night of memories without a few tears shed. Mary Bindas, CHM’s Volunteer Coordinator created a slide show showcasing the special moments with our volunteers. Both Mary Bindas and Cynthia Adams, Associate Executive Director spoke and thanked the volunteers for their wonderful work. One particular message came from one of our current ROP residents, Emmanuel. He began saying how he has come such a long way with the help of CHM. He further spotlighted CHM Board Member Mike Sarafa as being more then just a friend and mentor but a brother and father figure. Sarafa introduced Emmanuel to his family and is currently helping him find a job as a Medical Assistant.

All in all, the night was wonderful. CHM would be nothing with out the volunteers that give 110% every time. So once again, thank you! Covenant House Michigan notices and appreciates all that you do.
