A Time to Celebrate!

August 4, 2010 - 11:43am

“I now give to you the 2010 GED Graduates of Covenant House Michigan!” are words that will live on in the lives of every graduate in attendance on July 23, 2010 at CHM. Although things were damp and dreary outside, the mood inside the chapel was lively and bright. The smiles, proud faces and positive energy filled the entire room. Obtaining a GED meant so much more to the recipients than just gaining a piece of paper. Having a GED could mean a chance at a better career, it could also mean a college life is possible, but having a GED certainly means that a better quality of life is available. Whatever road these graduates choose to travel, it should be noted that against all odds, these graduates have successfully overcome a huge challenge.

The night began with the audience welcoming the 2010 graduates with a standing ovation. That was followed by the mistress of ceremony introducing Margaret Hailey who spoke a beautiful prayer. The prayer was immediately followed by Covenant House's very on Ashley Officer, who sang the National Anthem wonderfully. Afterward the audience had the pleasure of hearing from the graduates who earned the highest scores on their exams. As valedictorian Joshua Smith, salutatorian Michael Young and excellent performance recipient Rima Machhhour took the stage, one could see the excitement, pride and gratification that filled the graduates. After those graduates spoke, Kiana Hurt, another GED recipient took the stage reciting a poem entitled “Don’t Quit.” The audience then had the pleasure of hearing Covenant House residents Ashley Officer and Kiarra Crowder sing “I Believe I Can Fly” which not only resonated with the graduates, but touched the audience as well. After their song selection, Mrs. Cynthia Adams took the stage explaining her happiness in the graduates. She also introduced the guest speaker for the night, Rev. Antonio Harlan. Rev. Harlan is a speaker, motivator as well as President of Southfield Sleep Center. The audience had the pleasure of hearing Rev. Harlan speak on positive thoughts and how necessary they are in having a successful life. He also spoke highly of the graduates and applauded them on their recent achievements. After Rev. Harlan finished his beautiful message, it was the moment that everyone had waited for. GED instructors Ms. Fannie Owens & Ms. Jakeyta Brown took the stage and began to introduce the GED graduating class of 2010. Some of Covenant House's very own residents received GED diplomas. This occasion was touching for everyone who got to witness it.

The 2010 GED Graduation was special on so many levels. One reason this night was special was because it was announced that this would be the last GED graduating class since the high school completion age has been moved up to 22. It was also meaningful because many of these graduates had been told that a higher education would never be a possibility. Despite difficult pasts, negativity and society stereotypes, these individuals have achieved so much. With the love and support of family, staff and Covenant House, these graduates may have a brighter future, but for now, it is a time for celebration!
