Shawn’s Success!
Since first arriving at Covenant House, Shawn has seen this as an opportunity to further his independence. Shawn came to CHM about three months ago after his grandmother had passed. He briefly lived with his mother, but knew that he could not stay there for long. With big aspirations, little money and no place to go, Shawn turned to Covenant House for shelter. But overall, he would gain so much more than just shelter.
Growing up, Shawn had always been the independent type. He even dropped out of High School to work so he could provide for his younger siblings and himself. Although he knew he needed his education, feeding and taking of his family was more urgent. As time continued to pass by, Shawn began to want more for himself. Shawn felt as though he had to provide for his family, but he also felt like he had been neglecting his own life. But it was not until his grandmother passed that he saw how precious life was and began to focus on his own needs.
Within just a short time, Shawn has completed his GED, found a job, made new friendships and gained even more independence. He believes that while being here at CH, “he gets to clear his mind… it’s just really positive.” Shawn credits CH and his pastor as to why he has been able to remain focused and optimistic.
Despite all of Shawn’s recent accomplishments, he only sees this as the beginning. He says he live by the notion of “keep trying, no matter what, just keep trying.” He plans to attend Madonna University in the fall majoring in Forensic Science. He enjoys crime scenes and helping others anyway he can. When he is not working or at school, Shawn enjoys playing basketball, listening to music and talking on the phone. While Shawn is young in age, his determination, selflessness and faith is beyond his years. To Shawn, getting his GED meant more than receiving a piece of paper; it was the beginning to his success.
