Pastor J and Friends Celebrate CHM Youth
On Friday evening of April 3, 2009, the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit held a wonderful concert for the benefit of Covenant House Michigan. The church’s mass choir and Pastor Johnson performed the music. Over 500 hundred people attended the concert, packing the church to its limit. In the end the church generously raised $5,000 for CHM, proving the event to be hugely successful.
The New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church has a history of supporting Covenant House Michigan. Pastor Johnson, affectionately known as “Pastor J”, has led the church’s efforts to support CHM. This past Valentine’s Day, her church donated $1,000 to CHM as a part of the Do 1 Thing project. The project encourages journalists, editors, and writers to shed light on the plight that many of our youth face.
As pastor of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church for over 9 years, Pastor Johnson unhesitatingly calls herself a “lover and a giver.” As a lung cancer survivor with a strong faith in God, she is a strong woman with a generous heart. She is grateful for the work that Covenant House Michigan does, and she has clearly made it her mission to support organizations like CHM. She described the recent event as “more than just a concert, but a celebration and a blessing.” She went on to discuss her favorite memory of the night, when a Covenant House resident decided to join her church. She was truly touched that this young lady had decided to “give her life over to Jesus.”
Pastor J and her church clearly recognize the importance of CHM’s cause. They have demonstrated their genuine concern and care for the young people suffering in our community. The generous help of people like Pastor J and her congregation ultimately allows CHM to carry out its mission, and serve the needs of our youth.
