CHM Resident Finds A New Home!

Bashful, 20 year old Willie can now say he has a place to call his own! Getting to where he is today has not been easy for Willie, but with the help of Southwest Solutions and the love of Covenant House, Willie now has a new sense of pride, responsibility and independence.

Willie has been on his own much of his life. He also has had to battle mental and physical challenges. He never really had a genuine family structure that he could depend on and turn to for help. Growing up he lived with friends whenever possible and eventually moved from shelter to shelter. It wasn’t until February that Willie found some sense of stability by residing at Covenant House. Willie was not only able to get shelter, but he also gained a family that up until then, he lacked. As Willie stated “people like Ms. Blanca really helped me… if it weren’t for her, I don’t know where I would be. She gave me support, help, confidence and love.” Willie has really enjoyed his time at Covenant House. Along with gaining new family and friends Willie also has a better understanding of what he wants out of life. He always knew he wanted to help society and be an authority figure, but he now plans on furthering his education in Criminal Justice. He eventually sees himself becoming a police officer and helping protect the streets of Detroit.

With all the recent good fortune that Willie has come across, he understands he has a long way to go. While his new apartment lacks a TV, couch, and cooking utensils, he plans on working hard to obtain everything that he needs. When Willie isn’t working he enjoys playing basketball, video games and spending time with his nephew. He is so proud of himself and grateful for having encountered Covenant House. He plans on taking what he has learned here and applying it to his everyday life.
