12 Kids of Christmas: Meet Janet

December 15, 2009 - 12:05pm

Reason to give #1: Prevent Homelessness

Illiteracy is one of the biggest challenges homeless kids face. 90% of our kids are school dropouts. They have 3rd grade reading levels and have a hard time with basic math. Without their education they aren’t able to get good jobs or go onto higher education. Help us provide our kids with an education so they can move forward instead of ending up on the streets.

Meet Janet.
Janet is 17 and attends the Southwest Charter High School and
Community Service Center.

We asked her her story, here's what she said.

Why did you come to Covenant House?
The reason I came to Covenant House was because I needed to complete my high school education. Covenant House has welcomed me and I feel at home. There are always activities and different things to help you stay busy. There's a lot of support too despite what we may go through. They accept us and try to help.

If you could pick one thing that Covenant House has helped you with, what would it be?
Covenant House has helped me with a lot of good advice and support.

What are you grateful for?
I'm grateful for being given another opportunity and being able to live my life and being able to continue to strive.

What's your best memory at Covenant House?
The support and help they've provided and all the fun activities after school.

And finally, what do you want to accomplish in the new year?
Finish high school! Get my high school diploma! Keep on going!

Yes! I want to give today to prevent homelessness and help all your kids, like Janet, succeed!
